About FSD Academy

The FSD Academy was formed by one-time Premier League player Matthew Piper and his good friend Owen Johnson. They shared a vision to create exciting career pathways and opportunities for individuals between 16-19yrs old, who have a passion for football and aspirations to pursue a qualification in sport. In their career to date, Owen and Matthew both experienced professional football in different ways. Their knowledge and experiences therefore combine perfectly to offer the best possible support to young players today. Since launching the academy we have also made other sports and fitness opportunities available to students which has proven to be popular and beneficial. We are therefore delighted to offer a unique choice of pathways from September 2018 (football, sports or combined). In order to support the sports pathway, Andre Winner, professional UFC fighter is a welcome addition to the team, specialising in mixed martial arts, fitness and boxing coaching, as well as offering valuable insights into self-discipline, determination and resilience.

Owen Johnson

Owen signed a professional contract at Leicester City but didn’t quite make the first team. Still playing a high level, semi-professional game, he faced a common dilemma of whether to find a job or go to college alongside the game he loved. He decided upon the college route. This positive choice to gain a sports qualification helped him to start the process of becoming the experienced, UEFA qualified coach that he is today. Alongside FSD Academy, Owen runs Don't Just Kick It (DJKI) football development centres and has a strong reputation across the city and county for his technical detail and driving the progress of individuals.

Matthew Piper

Matthew made it to the dizzy heights of the Premier League, only for his career to be cut short due to injury at the age of 26. Previously gaining a qualification in sports and having taken his UEFA coaching badge his natural progression was also to become a qualified football coach. The two have coached in the Leicestershire community for years and have worked with plenty of young boys of many different talents, characters, cultures, aspirations and beliefs. The Football & Sports Diploma Academy is a football academic training hub that specialises in coaching young people towards their aspirations; out on the training pitches, in the classroom and in general day to day life skills. Through personal support and direction, we ensure each individual is given the opportunity to achieve their potential. Alongside FSD Academy, Matt works in the BBC Sports Commentary team on all Leicester City League and Cup games.
